Season 3, Episode 1: Time Has Come Today

Izzie is trying to cope with the death of Denny and has a mental break down. Meredith continues to try to sort out her Derek/Finn love triangle. Addison discovers Derek is still in love with Meredith and wants to end their marriage. During a plague quarantine Derek gives George relationship advice.

Cristina receives a surprise when Burke's parents walk in on her and Burke in a compromising position. The interns must save a patient who has a tree branch stuck through his abdomen. Addison and Derek deal with difficult decisions regarding their marriage. Mark and Addison's past and present relationship complicate things even further.

Meredith has a dream about a threesome with Finn and Derek. George is getting irritated that that a week-long temporary stay by Callie has become longer. Finn and Derek arrange dates with Meredith on the same day. Izzie attempts to return to the hospital, but ultimately cannot bring herself to do it. Alex treats a young girl who claims to feel no pain.

This episode sees the addition of Dr. Mark Sloane, played by Eric Dana, to the staff of Seattle Grace. He immediately upsets Dr. Addison Montgomery's concentration to a serious degree. In addition, Meredith suffers a pregnancy scare but is almost relieved when it turns out to be appendicitis. Izzy also meets with Denny Duquette's father about his son's untimely death and his will.

After Derek finds out more about Mark and Addison's relationship, he and Addison finalize things. The interns are allowed to attend a hospital staff meeting, in order to defend the competency of a resident. While Bailey treats a young mother who is battling breast cancer, Meredith and Addison are faced with a couple who find themselves in an awkward position.

Jealousy runs rampant when Cristina is given the opportunity to work with Preston on a "Humpty Dumpty" procedure and George gets to work with Addison on an unusual case. When Derek's sister comes to visit, his divorce from Addison is brought up. Meanwhile, Alex questions what he's going to specialize in, and Meredith becomes Izzie's boss.

What Derek intends to be a trip to get away from everything for a few days turns into his male co-workers joining him on a camping trip. While they're gone, Addison and Callie run into an issue with a pregnant patient, Meredith assists Sloan on an unusual procedure, and Bailey confronts Cristina about her recent behavior. In the end, Derek and Meredith work out their problems and get back together.

George finds that sex is a way to deal with the death of his father, concerning Izzie and Callie. The interns treat a woman who has stage 4 cancer. Callie and Cristina operate on a runner to save his legs. Meredith accidentally tells Mark about the Chief's resignation. George goes to Callie's hotel room, telling her he loves and her and proposing marriage.

InIn "Wishin and Hopin", the hospital is frozen due to a cancer patient, who is emitting toxic blood gases. George has a big announcement. While Izzie has issues worrying about how her money was spent pn the Free Clinic, Meredith has issues with her mother who is admitted to Seattle Grace. Cristina has issues with contemplating balance between personal life and career. The Free Clinic is opened to a motherless girl becoming a woman.

Cristina worries about revealing her and Preston's engagement to Meridith, but wants to tell her before anyone else finds out. Among all the chaos, Chief Webber gets a new hairstyle.

Derek continues to search for Meredith, eventually finding her coat and figuring out that she is still under the water. Izzie fights to save a patient who is suffering from seizures and trapped between two vehicles on the ferry. George continues to search for a patient's missing son and Alex tries to find the family of a pregnant Jane Doe before she has surgery.
Season 3, Episode 17: Some Kind of Miracle

Meredith is in a dark, empty room, where she is told by previously deceased people that she is dead. She argued that this was just her brain reacting to the trauma. The doctors are doing everything to warm Meredith's body up. Addison gets called out to deal with a Jane Doe. George and Izzie have an argument about Callie. Derek decides to go visit Ellis in her hospital room. The doctors revive Meredith.

The battle to become the new chief intensifies as yet another doctor throws a hat into the ring. Best friends George and Izzie find themselves growing apart due to ongoing frustrations with each other. Izzie realizes that she remembers something no one else does, and struggles with that revelation, while George meets his new father-in-law, Alex works with Jane Doe, and Callie has a relative come to visit. The hospital board starts the process of interviewing candidates for the Chief position, and when Mark takes Meredith on as his intern to impress the chief, Derek gets upset.

Izzie donates bone marrow for her daughter's leukemia treatment and finds that her past is coming back to haunt her. Derek wants the job of Chief, but must get past Meredith to get there. Meredith, on the other hand, must learn to deal with her stepmother. Christina finds that she is still caught between Burke and Marlow. Alex continues to try to find out who Jane Doe really is.

In "Desire", Seattle Grace's chairman of the board of directors gets admitted. All of the chairman's attendings go for his favor. Meanwhile, Izzy and George are having issues because they are continually faced with the results of an infidelity. Preston is pushing Cristina to go ahead and make a decision.

Because of problems in Seattle, Addison takes a trip to Los Angeles to visit friends. In LA Addison helps out at her friend's clinic where they are in need of an OB/GYN. Cristina is planning her wedding to Burke and must deal with her mother in law's surprise visit.

Addison leaves the hospital to head to Southern California in order to get away from the complication of working with her ex-husband. Cristina gives in and starts to plan for her wedding to Burke.

The interns face the biggest challenge yet, their first year medical exams, while the residents work on three injured mountain climbers. The death of Meredith's stepmom weighs on her and causes her to be unavailable for the test. Callie grows more suspicious about George and Izzie's relationship while Cristina tries to write her wedding vows.

Callie writes Cristina's wedding vows on her hand. After having a miscarriage, Adele reveals Richard was the father. Izzie tells George she's in love with him. Burke calls off the wedding, feeling he has forced Cristina to change. Cristina goes to Burke's apartment, only to find out he has left. Richard tells Derek he is the new Chief.
