The sixth season of Grey's Anatomy premiered on September 24, 2009. This season introduced several new cast members because of the merger between Mercy West Hospital and Seattle Grace Hospital.

Season 6, Episode 1: Good Mourning

The doctors fight to save Izzie, after her surgery to treat cancer, and George, who was hit by a bus trying to help an accident victim. Izzie wakes up to learn that George is dead and everyone in the hospital is reeling. Meanwhile, Hunt does a double amputation and Arizona deals with a teen going through painful growth spurts.

Season 6, Episode 2: Goodbye

The staff continues to move toward acceptance while Arizona makes a calculated step to diagnose her patient. Dr. Hunt's patient begins to sink into a depression.

Season 6, Episode 3: I Always Feel Like Somebody's Watchin' Me

Budget cuts cause the residents and interns to fear for their jobs, and they all scramble to do what they can to keep from being fired. Izzie returns to surgery earlier than expected. The arrival of Miranda and Alex's aneurysm patient's schizophrenic son causes problems when she refuses to have the procedure she needs because of her worry for him.

Season 6, Episode 4: Tainted Obligation

It is up to Meredith to save her own father's life when he is hospitalized with liver failure. Izzie struggles with the transition from patient back to doctor. When Thatcher makes an entrance to Seattle Grace, he vomits all over Meredith's sneakers. Alex finds a tick in his ear over lunch.

Season 6, Episode 5: Invasion

Seattle Grace and Mercy West begin their merge. The residents fight for their spots, worried many are going to be let go because of the merger. Callie must face her father who is upset that she is a lesbian, and comes to Seattle to convince her to change her ways. Meredith must remain in bed while recovering from surgery.

Season 6, Episode 6: I Saw What I Saw

Seattle Grace and Mercy West begin a competition where they figh over burn victim patients. A patient dies unexpectedly due to negligence, and the Chief tries to track down who was responsible for her death. Many different doctors treated the patient so all must answer questions about their actions that might have lead to her death.

Season 6, Episode 7: Give Peace a Chance

Derek provokes a long-coming showdown with the Chief, while he works on a seemingly inoperable tumor. Cristina is still feeling frustrated with her lack of surgeries. Owen helps Cristina with her surgical skills. Lexie is selected for Derek's surgery. Izzie skips her cancer treatment, which puts Alex in tears. Reid comforts Alex.

Season 6, Episode 8: Invest in Love

During the show's transitional season, one of Arizona Robbins' patients makes an offer to Seattle Grace that could change the hospital forever - a $25 million donation. Unfortunately, his condition is worsening. Without the titular Greys, we have more time to focus on Cristina's growing relationship with Jackson Avery of Mercy West.

Season 6, Episode 9: New History

Izzie returns to the hospital with her former high school mentor, hoping to find treatment for his dementia. Alex confronts her and she blames her being fired on him. Owen recruits Dr. Teddy Altman, a fellow Iraqi War vet, as the new cardiothoracic surgeon, and Cristina questions the nature of their relationship and her competency. The stress in Richard's life causes him to consider leaving surgery for a while and to start drinking again.

Season 6, Episode 10: Holidaze

The holidays bring new issues to the hospital, including the arrival of Miranda's father, who disapproves of the choices she's made, the arrival of Bailey's father, and the arrival of a woman from Mark's past. When Thatcher Grey questions the Chief's recent behavior and his possible drinking problem, Meredith comes to his defense. Cristina suspects Owen and Teddy either had a past or there is something going on between them.

Part of a "Grey's Anatomy"/"Private Practice" crossover. Mark brings Addison back to Seattle to help him with a difficult procedure on his pregnant daughter Sloan. Tensions between Mark and Lexie lead to their break-up and her sleeping with Alex. Owen wonders about Teddy's motives when Teddy assigns Cristina to lead a complicated surgery. Meredith is asked to assist on a high-profile operation, which leads Derek to be suspicious.

Season 6, Episode 12: I Like You So Much Better When You're Naked

Izzie returns to Seattle, with an interest in getting a job in the area and reuniting with Alex, but he doesn't want to be with her anymore. Derek confronts Richard about his drinking problem. Cristina, Owen, and Teddy find themselves in an awkward spot after Cristina's confession. Callie comes down with chicken pox.

Season 6, Episode 13: State of Love and Trust

In "State of Love and Trust", Karev finds the first pediatric case is more challenging than expected. Webber isn't pleased over the prospect of having to make a difficult choice. And crisis during a surgical procedure clouds Derek's inaugural shift as temporary chief of staff at Seattle Grace Hospital.

Season 6, Episode 14: Valentine's Day Massacre

In "Valentine's Day Massacre", the roof collapses at a popular restaurant. Dozens of people are injured and rushed to the hospital on Valentine's Day. Chief of Surgery, Derek, tries to maintain a schedule, and Meredith struggles with being the Chief's wife. Mark and Callie work to convince Sloan to do what is right for the baby.

Season 6, Episode 15: The Time Warp

In this flashback-laden episode, Derek starts the hospital lecture series back up. Miranda talks about her early days as a shy resident, Callie presents a polio case that she encountered, and Richard remembers a case he worked on with Ellis Grey that involved a patient who was diagnosed with GRID, which was later renamed HIV. The beginnings of Richard and Ellis' affair are recalled as well.

Season 6, Episode 16: Perfect Little Accident

When Avery's grandfather, the famous surgeon Dr. Harper Avery, is rushed to the hospital, some of the staff finds his request for an abnormal surgery troubling. Cristina and Teddy try to do a lung transplant on a cancer survivor. Meanwhile, Callie and Arizona try to help Mark and Teddy get over their pasts and move on with their lives.

Season 6, Episode 17: Push

Owen has a patient with a football-sized tumor. Cristina decides to work with Richard so she can spy for Hunt. Mark asks Teddy out on a date and although she initially says no, she eventually says yes. Arizona's has a complicated case with a little boy who had a cyst that burst. Bailey goes on her third date with anesthesiologist Ben.

Season 6, Episode 18: Suicide Is Painless

In "Suicide is Painless", Teddy's patient is contemplating taking her life and ceasing with her treatment, and turns to Hunt for help. This causes Hunt to remember certain memories of his life when he was at war, and also his relationship in the past with Teddy. Callie and Arizona dispute about their futures. Richard attempts to adjust to being a surgeon.

Season 6, Episode 19: Sympathy for the Parents

Alex's brother arrives at Seattle Grace with a hernia, and no money. Alex must try to find a way to do the surgery for free. The interns discover Alex has not contacted his family since he stared working at Seattle Grace. He is forced to reveal, and face secrets from his past.

Season 6, Episode 20: Hook, Line and Sinner

Sloan shows up at Mark's apartment just as she goes into labor, and luckily Teddy, Mark, Callie, and Arizona are there to help with the birth. Even though Mark wants to keep the baby, he understands Sloan can't care for it and helps her with the adoption. Dr. Webber, Lexie, and Derek meet a patient who will change their lives forever.

Season 6, Episode 21: How Insensitive

Karev processes the news that his divorce with Izzie is final. Derek reveals to Mere that Owen tried to get Teddy transferred. Callie and Arizona break up when Callie realizes that there are other people out there, specifically those who may want kids. The doctors treat a 700-pound man. Meredith is unhappy to learn of Owen's feelings for Teddy.

Season 6, Episode 22: Shiny Happy People

Haley, played by guest star Demi Lovato, has an incoming diagnosis of schizophrenia, but this is disputed by Dr. Karev. Dr. Yang comes face to face with Dr. Hunt over his previous relationship with Dr. Altman, a deep friendship started when the two were serving in the military. Dr. Sloan comes clean with Meredith's sister Lexie over an issue that has been bothering him.

Season 6, Episode 23: Sanctuary

Seattle Grace Hospital is rocked to its very core when the staff is confronted with a crisis they could never have seen coming. An armed shooter roams the hospital, causing chaos. Meredith discovers she is pregnant with Derek's child, and Owen must choose whether he wants to be with Teddy or Cristina.

Season 6, Episode 24: Death and All His Friends

The tension wracks up as Cristina's surgical skills are put to the test when Derek is shot and she must save him. Meredith must deal with losing her baby as well. Arizona and Callie decide to get back together when Arizona decides she wants children. Bailey is forced to let one of her own die.
