Season 5, Episode 1: Dream a Little Dream of Me

As a nasty ice storm rages over Seattle, Dr. Webber finds out that the hospital is now ranked at #12. Derek is stabbed in the palm of his hand with a scalpel by Rose. A military doctor catches Cristina's eye, and he helps her when gets stabbed by an icicle. Meredith and Derek work on finding "happily ever after".

In "Here Comes the Flood", the interns and residents aren't exactly happy campers when the hospital chief of staff gets serious and implements stricter rules. Issues over living arrangements arise for Meredith and Derek. Cristina's diagnosis of a patient suffering with migraines is questioned by Lexie.

In "Brave New World", Callie gets worried. It is her first real date with Erica, she starts to get jitters and her nerves start to get to her. Meanwhile, Cristina, while going through the hospital, discovers an area of the hospital that had historically been neglected, apparently unknown, and unused.

George's first day as a resident is busy, including working with a team of surgeons who are performing six kidney transplants in one day, and it all helps distract him from Lexie's feelings for him. Elsewhere, Bailey's dream of doing a domino surgery is crushed when the donors learn of her husband's affair and Meredith feels slighted for not getting credit for the clinical trial she worked on with Derek.

The new trauma surgeon presents his style of training, which shocks some of the residents and interns. Miranda is faced with trying to treat a 10-year-old girl who has an illness that is considered inoperable and hopeless by many. Meanwhile, Lexi avoids George after he doesn't choose her as an intern, Alex tries to figure out what is between him and Izzie, and Callie deals with trying to figure out what she wants.

Owen is back at Seattle Grace, where he's been named chief of trauma. Richard tries to convince Miranda to do surgery on a little girl with an inoperable tumor. Cristina is insulted when Owen cannot remember her name. Owen tells Derek and Mark that they are not needed when they show up to help with two accident victims. Izzie is upset when Alex asks her if it is okay if he sleeps with other women.

In "These Ties That Bind", Izzie fights emotionally with her ghost. Torres, who is determined to stop thinking about Hahn, decides to try a new ground-breaking procedure. Dr. Sloan shows regret for his tryst with Meredith's sister Lexie, realizing that he betrayed a friend's trust. The Chief faces major problems keeping the unit together when the death of the head surgeon becomes the latest of a series of major issues that seem to be plaguing the hospital.

Derek resists efforts to get him to return home while Mark takes on a major procedure, a facial transplant. The interns are in an uproar over romantic issues, and Mark and Lexie's relationship is gossiped over. Cristina tells the others what's going on, which leads to Izzie being admitted as a patient.
