Season 1

The first episode begins with intern Meredith Grey starting her job at Seattle Grace Hospital. The show highlights the hectic weeks of Meredith and her fellow interns' experiences, including their tough training under Dr. Miranda Bailey. Other highlights include Meredith's rocky relationship with Derek Shepherd, her struggles with her mother's Alzheimer's disease, Derek's rivalry with Burke, Izzie's attempts to be seen as a legitimate doctor as she used to model to make money for medical school, George's feelings for Meredith and Burke's sexual relationship with intern Christina. A startling plot twist at the end of season one reveals the arrival of Addison Shepherd, Derek's estranged wife.

Season 2

The second season was 27 episodes as it included the 5 episodes left over from season one. The episode "Bring the Pain" that aired as the 14th episode was actually intended to be the finale for the first season. Highlights of the second season include Izzie and Alex's relationship which was cut short when Izzie fell in love with heart patient Denny Duquette, Bailey's pregnancy and revelations about her personal life and the rocky relationship between Derek and Meredith when it is learned that Derek is still married to Addison Montgomery, a neo-natal surgeon who comes to work at Seattle Grace Hospital.

Season 3

Highlights of the season included Izzie Steven's struggle to let go of Denny Duquette, Meredith's decision to choose between her new boyfriend Finn and her feelings for Derek, the fallout of Burke's gunshot injury and the decision weighing over the heads of the four attending surgeons as to who would be named the new Chief of Surgery. Other highlights included the decision on who would be named Chief Resident out of the resident staff, which ended up being Callie, Burke calling off his wedding, Chief Webber deciding to stay on as Chief of Surgery and George discovering the he had in fact failed the final intern exam. A few major plot points left open at the end of season three included the relationship between Meredith and Derek and the love triangle between Izzie, George and Callie. Derek's ex-wife Addison also left for Los Angeles at the end of the season to start a new life.

Season 4

The fourth season started with Burke getting replaced by Dr. Erica Hahn as head of cardiothoracic surgery. Lexie Grey, Meredith's younger half-sister, who had appeared in the final two episodes of the previous season, joined the cast. Guest stars included Seth Green who appeared in a two episode arc. The finale was a double episode and aired on May 22, 2008. This season focused on Meredith's relationships in her personal life with her sister, Derek and her mother. It also saw the emergence of Thatcher Grey, Meredith and Lexie's father who was devastated due to the death of his wife. At the end of the season, Meredith reunited with Derek.

Season 5

The fifth season of Grey's Anatomy premiered on September 25, 2008 with a two hour special. The focus of season five was on Mark Sloan's relationship with Lexie Grey despite her sister Meredith and her boyfriend Derek telling him not to get involved. Other highlights included the discovery of Ellis Grey's journals from when she was a hospital resident, Meredith's reaction to her mother's journals, the ghostly appearance of Denny Duquette in Izzie Steven's hallucinations, the discovery that Izzie is in fact terminally ill which is why she had the hallucinations, Meredith's old friend Sadie's appearance and Lexie and her intern friends performing medical procedures on each other. During this season, the intensity rises between the medical staff as an opportunity for an unusual surgery opens up as well as the various staff romances that seem to plague the residents at the hospital.

Season 6

The sixth season introduced several new cast members because of the merger between Mercy West Hospital and Seattle Grace Hospital. The new residents from Mercy included Dr. Jackson Avery, Dr. Reed Adamson, Dr. Charles Percy and Dr. April Kepner. April's experience at Seattle Grace started out rocky as she was fired in the sixth episode and rehired in the thirteenth episode. Later in season six, Dr. Teddy Altman, an Iraqi war veteran and cardiothoracic surgeon joined the cast. Teddy had served with Dr. Owen Hunt who was introduced to the series in season five. Her character was made a regular at the beginning of 2010.

Season 7

The seventh season transitions two guest stars from season six, Dr. Jackson Avery and Dr. April Kepner into series regulars. A guest star, Dr. Andrew Perkins is slated to play a trauma counselor for two episodes of the season. Other plot spoilers for this season include April and Jackson moving in with Meredith and Derek and the appearance of Derek's sister, Amelia Shepherd, who is a Private Practice series regular. Although Izzie Steven left the show in the sixth season, it was confirmed that she will return to the world of Grey's Anatomy to have closure with Alex Karev regarding their relationship.
